Another little guy (or nun to be completely accurate) for the Doodle Collage. This time I experimented with concentrated watercolor and clayboard. Contrary to my watercolors on paper these little numbers go by quickly and usually aren't sketched out... at least not yet. I allow my hand to just "go with it." Also, while you're here please make sure to check out the store as my new book Fleas! has been released, so give it a look see. It's really good.

I've added an actual picture of the "Hillary Clinton: The Communist Bitch of D.C." shirt to the store section. You must click on the preview link or the shirt icon itself to view the picture or just look at it here. The shirts are going pretty quickly and it's an extremely limited edition so if you ever want one you should place your orders now.

Just thought I'd post some random sketches I've done recently:

These two Elvis drawings were done for this little thing I've posted on here before called the Doodle Collage. Only the second one was used in the collage but I figured I'd go ahead and post them both so you, the active, faithful audience can see a little bit more of my sketches and what they look like. So feast your eyes.
They also both share an explorative process. The Doodle Collage being a casual thing allows me to try techniques I'm not allowed to do in the commercial world. Well, I shouldn't say not allowed but I don't like throwing a client a curve ball technique that has no precedent, whereas in the Doodle Collage I feel like anything goes! Granted the above sketch isn't necessarily brilliantly inventive by any measure, but it's something that wouldn't make it in to my illustrative portfolio... yet... unless of course you want that sort of thing.
The more plump Elvis was created with a scanned pencil sketch and colored in photoshop.

I did the below picture of what I could presume most of you think looks like Fidel a couple of days before he declined the role of leader of Cuba. It wasn't my intention for it to look like anyone, but as it developed I just went with it.Too bad none of the shapes would afford a cigar drawn in his mouth. Back story: I was sitting there in my apartment looking at all the wasted supplies I have lying around when I said to myself, "Hey, why don't I do something with the clayboard?" Apparently, I didn't have reason not do anything with it and I banged this out in about 30 minutes (you can probably tell, since it shows no sign of planning on my part and an even smaller sign of skill with the medium) But I had fun! Then he forfeited his power and I thought it was at least a post for that reason alone, you know because I'm topical like that.

And finally check out this site, The Superest.com. It's a great concept with some fairly witty humor. The challenge is to create a superhero which beats the current champ. They were kind enough to allow me to participate a few weeks ago and since then my hero has been DEMOLISHED by other superior superheroes. Oh, well. Thanks Kevin and Sutter and Ryan who introduced my work to them.

Welcome back, I apologize for not meeting my update quota. However, perhaps I should wipe away my crocodile tears. After all I sincerely doubt anyone is frequently checking back anyway. So I don't feel too guilty about being late to a non-existent event.
Recently I was working with a graphic designer, Ligia Vaughan, and she thought for the specific assignment that perhaps removing the line from my work would suit the concept the best. Ideally she wanted to push my illustrations a little closer to three dimensionality. I'm not really a painter but the commission was pretty lax so I thought I would volunteer trying my hand at oils for this project. It was fun and stimulating to play around with another medium for one assignment. I'll gladly keep it as a hobby but wouldn't want to have seep into my portfolio beyond this "news/blog" page. With that said, take a good look because I don't do many oils. This is probably the only one you'll see for awhile.

Hope everyone is doing well on this eve of Groundhog's Day.
I've just finished a drawing of Hillary Clinton that I did as a personal piece. I've always loved that Sweeney Todd ink drawing. I recall in middle school I saw the drawing and fell in love with the expressiveness in the drawing and the madness it portrayed. Then I found out that it was for a musical and I lost interest. Nevertheless, I like how it came out and I thought it was graphic enough and humorous enough to merit making a fancy looking shirt. So if you're interested give me a ring or an email and pre-order your shirt today! If you're interested in any other Britt Spencer products visit my store.
As a side note, I do not support Hillary Clinton or any of the other candidates that look as if they may get their party's nomination. Look forward to the next four years of my work to be criticisms of both parties. Consider this piece a mighty harbinger of my political era!

just updated the store section of the site, so give it a gander.
My friend, Ryan Terry, of www.ry-guy.com fame, just completed a fun project called "Doodle Collage" in which he asked people to submit ideas for him to sketch. He then took all those ideas and constructed one large doodle of all these ideas and made something that looked quite spectacular. You can view his doodle here, doodle collage v1.
At any rate, Ryan has decided to give the "Doodle Collage" a second go and has opened it to be a collaborative project including yours truly and another talented artist Dave Montes, www.davemontes.com. If you feel so inclined go to "Doodle Collage version 2" page, doodle collage v2, and submit your own request, who knows it might get thrown in the piece somewhere.

Finally, the new site is up! I'll try and keep up with it so it doesn't go through another dry spell. Perhaps, I'm a bit of an optimist but my plans are to post something new about once or maybe twice a week and at the very least an update once or twice a month. So please, check back frequently. At some point I'm going to try and make this "news" page a little more interactive and allow visitors to post comments but for the time being you'll have to withhold your pithy remarks and save them for a later date. but if you simply must get something to me you can always email me at britt@brittspencer.com. At any rate, Welcome. I hope you enjoy.
